Mafia Cities - New York

From the crowded tenements of Little Italy to the skyscrapers of Manhattan, this is the story of how the Mafia built a criminal empire in America’s greatest city, and how that empire began to unravel.

MAFIA CITIES – NEW YORK traces the organisation’s origins in the immigrant neighbourhoods of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, where extortion and protection rackets preyed on communities seeking a new life. Prohibition transformed street gangs into wealthy criminal enterprises, unleashing a bloody struggle for control. From that violence emerged the Five Families, with figures such as Charles “Lucky” Luciano helping establish a system that would shape organised crime for generations.

Through archival footage, expert insight and the accounts of those who investigated its crimes, the documentary explores the Mafia’s grip on gambling, unions, construction and the waterfront. Behind the wealth and celebrity of notorious bosses lay intimidation, exploitation and murder.
But the power of the families carried the seeds of their decline. Rivalries, drug trafficking and growing fortunes tested old loyalties, while surveillance, racketeering prosecutions and insiders willing to testify gave investigators the means to dismantle their leadership. From the calculated authority of Carlo Gambino to the public spectacle of John Gotti, this is a story of ambition, betrayal and the breaking of the code of silence, revealing how the New York Mafia lost its once formidable hold, even as its criminal legacy endured.
